November Water Blind

This water blind incorporates an angle entry from across the dike road through somewhat heavy cover. The line to the blind carries the dog through very heavy vegetation in the water and over three points. The last point is on the edge of a very long channel where the dogs are required to cross at an angle and exit at an angle to the base of the cypress tree where the birds are planted.

This type of blind requires a trusting dog that takes a great initial line. Since the dog cannot really get a picture of the line expect some effort to try and find a line by the dog. In this case there is a small channel just to the right of the actual line that most of the dogs sought out as their target.

Handling into the thick cover away from the small channel establishes true control and re-enforces the trust the dog has for his handler.

Be careful about correcting for the desire to find a line by the dog. In most cases the dog will be sent on such a blind (obvious line) so you do not need to send mixed signals by correcting for such taught behavior.

This type blind should be reserved for older more experienced dogs who demonstrate maturity in such situations...otherwise this could turn into a ping-pong fest where nothing is learned.

The distance for this blind is about 200 yards. The last portion is open water with a cross wind blowing away from the bird (dog has to cast in to the wind at an angle to keep the line and get the bird).

Finally, do not allow early beaching near the bird. Have the dog swim directly to or just past the bird.
